Dinosaur in the city + Seven Claws 4 studies of a sulfur - rich environment. I forgot the name :) I tried to improve my brush-work and push the forms and the colors. A Zorn - study to get better with brushwork and suggesting details. 3 value - comps to get better at planning my illustrations. I did a bunch of pencil - sketches before this and picked the 3 best. I started with a light grey background, instead of white and painted on top of it with a dark grey. It instantly gave a more natural result. Once I had the main elements in the comp (the dam and the mountains), I added the waves with white and the foreground (close to black). Thinking in 2 values first makes things easier. But I find that since foreground, midground and background are needed for an illustration, it tends to get easier when introducing 2 more shades of value. Lastly another finished illustration. This is a map, to be used in a DnD-adventure. I did a 3D base, which I then overpainted.

From left to right: "A warning - city lights - fountain face / ancient mech - gaining superpowers - in the trenches - tempting serpent" These are great warm - ups. Check out Lorenz Hideyoshi. He is a big inspiration for this and I love his work. Also I finished an illustration.
To get better at composition and key-framing, I thought I should start doing more spitpaints. Spitpaints are paintings that are kept under 30 min. There is a group on facebook, that coined the term. I think they are a great practice. Btw it is amazing what some people are able to achieve in that time-frame.
Check out Karel D'Huyvetter's spitpaintings. I can't stop looking at them! I am working on a new landscape illustration. I am using 3D and overpainting to encrease speed... Getting the background to work is quite tricky this time. I am not sure, if it should stay like that. We will see... Some studies for the background and the general colors.
