This started as a side-project to experiment with my workflow. It took so long, but I am quite happy with how it turned out. the value comp... it changed quite a lot from there.
The final illustration. And here are some the studies I did, whenever I had a problem to solve with this image.
Whenever I don't know how to solve a drawing- or painting-problem, I try to get reference and do a study. Then I can go back and take an educated guess at the solution. Painting is problem-solving at its core.
Trying some new brushes and style to keep it fresh. Inspired by Eyvine Earle #visdev #blackforest #digitalart #practice #illustration
Sometimes I do sketches like the above to see where my current abilities to paint and draw without reference stand. This way I get an idea on what to focus on in my studies. 1st try at rendering simple spheres. Not so happy and also a bit rushed. 2nd try. I really learned a lot from keeping it as simple as this.
The latest study, trying to get better at painting materials.
Also I was trying a new workflow, keeping the shadows, ao and first light - passes on 1 layer each for the whole figure, while having masks for each element. Something I picked up, while working on mobile-game-graphics, but it works for any style of course. The reference image is from this site: https://www.facebook.com/LillianLiuPhotography I learned a lot about how to paint foliage by this one. The trick is in layering and keep stacking on top. Could have pushed this even further, but I got out of it, what I needed.
30 sec gestures Some longer figure and anatomy studies A color study step-by-step more turning frogs something personal for a change. :)
