I am trying to get better at painting skin. So I did a color-study of a work of art, then tried to formulate my findings into a simple spherical-shape and then lastly did my own version of the work of art from memory. Turns out I go darker and more saturated in my own work. Also redder in the shadows. So I have to look out for that in future attempts. I didn't go for correct proportions, since the goal was to learn about colors. I elongated her face, because I find it enhanced her seemingly bored expression.

In January I went to Galapagos. My girlfriend and my family gave me the trip as a gift. I went to Santa Cruz and San Cristobal. My favorite thing was snorkeling and how the animals don't fear humans at all, so they come very close. The famous vegetarian sea-lizards are everywhere, one time I almost stepped on one. Fortunately I saw it in the last moment, but the blend in really effectively. See if you can find the sea-lion in the above picture... Being a rather slow creature myself, I enjoyed watching the giant land-turtles eat away at the grass. It is so meditative, just to watch them. I had to chase that crab for a while, to get this photo. But once I understood, that it didn't like to get into the water (they jump from rock to rock!) I cornered him and did this paparazzi-shot. Of course I left it alone immediatly after. One of the famous Darwin-finches posing. Once the turtles die, the armor-plates fall off the shell and it is left. They had 2 big ones in the turtle-sanctuary where I visited and they invited my to get inside. It wasn't as heavy as it looks, but still I wouldn't want to carry it around everyday...
And yes, I am losing hair. It is from a hostel in LaSerena.
The main thing I learned and used here, was to do a light-yellow underpainting, to set the mood of the painting. |
This is my blog. I will share information about workflow, my insights into image-making or just general thoughts and rants about being an artist. Archives
